Whether it’s at the park, on the beach, in the car or online – you’ll get your much needed therapy sessions, no matter what the challenges
Psychotherapist and co-director, Johnny Morton, talks about the essential flexibility of Blue’s successful therapy.
As the UK begins to open up again, the phrase ‘hybrid working’ has been all over the news lately as offices and businesses try to ensure they can offer a combined home or remote/workplace-based service.
Whilst many providers cancelled services during the pandemic and many are still on restricted face-to-face sessions, psychotherapists at Blue Talking Therapies have been operating in a hybrid manner since the start of the Covid outbreak.
Blue Talking Therapies, which treats common mental health problems through evidence-based talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is totally committed to continuing to offer support and treatment, no matter how challenging the circumstances are for people.
Many practitioners, including some NHS providers stopped offering services because they couldn’t work face-to-face, they weren’t offering therapy online and only provided telephone sessions, which isn’t appropriate for some conditions.
Conditions like depression and OCD can be difficult to navigate in normal times – the prospect of losing support or not being able to access it is unthinkable and so we’ve always been totally committed to coming up with ways to help, no matter what Covid-19 restrictions we’ve had to work around.
When people are suffering, they need to know we’re there and we are making it work; if we can’t do things the way we normally would, then we will always find another way within the guidelines, regardless.
More than ever, people need more help than is available: We’ve seen cases of OCD and depression treble since 2020, where the impact on people’s lives is extreme.
Because of Covid-19, both the demand and the challenges towards delivery did increasee significantly, so as a clinic we developed really creative ways to continue to help people. In fact, we’ve actually learned to embrace Covid and sift it for its gold in sessions, with some great results.
If someone needs to have a session whilst walking along the beach, that’s fine. If they want to sit in their car, if they can’t leave the house, we can arrange whatever is needed. The point is, whatever will help them get the help they need, we will endeavour to do it.
“In some cases, the virtual sessions have actually led to some really positive results that we wouldn’t have maybe seen face-to-face. For example, with social anxiety, which is often a negative or false perception of self, we’ve helped clients gradually expose themselves to social scenarios using virtual calls via Zoom or Teams with several friends, acquaintances, or peers. They can record the calls and we can look back to see how they really appear, as opposed to how they think they appear, in front of others.
We were always the kind of service that would meet our clients where they are – Covid has just enabled us to expand the flexibility to how we do that and has made our therapy more accessible than ever.
We have been committed to using a very negative turn of events to help raise the platform of mental health. Blue exists because people are more informed and are searching for a personalised service. We have always led the philosophy that our service should be one which turns the perception of mental health and support for it on its head.
The covid pandemic has pushed us to consider this aspect further and spend much of our time not only helping people to change their lives but working hard to promote the normalisation of mental illhealth and reduce stigma to all within our communities.
We have thought long and hard about what we would want and need if we were faced with a mental health problem and have used the pandemic to shape our services into just this.
