Feel empowered to regain control of your life with Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy

EMDR therapy and what it does to help people

If you’re struggling with a common mental health problem such as  Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), you may have heard of EMDR therapy, which is becoming more and more popular as people realise its effectiveness. But what exactly is EMDR therapy and how does it work?

Blue Talking Therapies’ Nikki Ladhar helps us to understand more.

What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a common form of psychotherapy used to treat common mental health problems, PTSD, trauma healing, childhood neglect or abuse. emotional pain, anxiety disorders, disturbed sleep, depression, addictions and phobias.

It works by addressing past traumatic experiences that can lead to various emotional and psychological difficulties in life. Using various different methods, including side-to-side eye movements, tapping, and auditory tones, paractitioners can help you to process the memory of the traumatic experience until it loses its emotionality. This helps you to be able to work through this trauma rather than avoiding or repressing it, which can lead to futher difficulties.

Benefits of EMDR therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses eye movements to treat physical and emotional issues. It has a positive effect on mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, addictions, phobias and more.

EMDR activates parts of the brain that store traumatic experiences, which can help decrease the intensity of these memories. It also helps clients identify triggers and create alternative perspectives to process any lingering hurt or fear.

Clients often feel empowered to take control of their lives after engaging in EMDR sessions because they have reduced past trauma; this upsurge in psychological wellbeing can then translate into strong emotional stability, increased self-confidence and improved cognitive functioning among other benefits.

An example of successful EMDR

I treated a gentleman who works as an HGV driver – he was involved in a major road traffic accident, which has impacted on his quality of life.  He really struggled with flashbacks, experienced severe levels of anxiety and self-critical thoughts around being a bad person and that he should have done something to prevent it from happening.  Our sessions focused on bringing up traumatic images from the accident to allow a reprocessing to take place. He achieved amazing results and was able to move past this traumatic event and re-engage with his life.

What we want you to know about EMDR therapy

EMDR is an incredible form of psychotherapy that can free you from some of the worst traumatic memories and flashbacks.   This is a goal-driven process which is targeted at your painful memories, to reprocess and store them in the right part of the brain for you.

It takes committment of course, however we see amazing clients who persevere with this form of therapy to get incredible results – this is down to the fact it enables you to bring up or think about memories without feeling very overwhelmed or upset, enabling the brain to heal.  Sessions can be for 60-90 minutes and all of our clients are treated in a way that makes them feel comfortable.
